Maxwell is a great tool, from what I've seen so far.
SI holds a lot of promise, and I hope it will provide a lot of speed over other similar methods. The SSI material slows rendering greatly, and as its name suggest, is used selectively.
SI, according to the press releases, "uses a path-tracing algorithm to render advanced illumination effects, such as colour bleeding and caustics. Subsequent releases will see further performance advances using a more complex bi-directional path-tracing algorithm."
Quality and speed are always the key things we desire. 3ds max's Radiosity and VRay's GI use give fast results, and 'physically real' methods like Maxwell and SI/G take more time.
I guess it comes down to "what do you need" and "how long are you willing to wait"

To put it bluntly Next Limit have totally screwed up. They have re written the render engine and now it generates images that look like scanline images, and that is when it renders, RC1 would not even render!! They have disable/cock up the code for the sky light system which was one of there best assets and as for the studio idea, I really don't understand what they are thinking, it make workflow impossible...
In my opinion there biggest mistake is to name it a release candidate when it is not even alpha!!
I have three licences and can safely say that if they were on CD I would be using the CD's to scare the birds in the garden as that is all Maxwell RC is useful for at the moment!!

great post, e3Di !!!
* * *
i don't really have a clue what's going on technically with all the releases and not-releases.
but i know that i'd like to try m~r once it works...
* * *
of course it must be annoying if some already started creating workflows with m~r!
we MUST wait.... cursing just doesn't help. or?

That is amazing about Maxwell. I had played with their beta awhile back when we first started talking about it.

Ah well, RC4 has just come out and it is as bad as the others. I've stopped installing it now!!!
If only the SI was a little quicker I am sure a mass of Maxwell people would buy pure cards/RD's. I put a post up the other day and it was amazing how many Maya users were thinking of getting RD's/Pure cards.

well... i think it won't get a lot quicker as promised in the «further performance advances using a more complex bi-directional path-tracing algorithm».
NL surely chose the worst politics for their product, but they must have some plans. we hope so, at least.

e3Di said they made it a standalone product with import functions for the different packages... what was it like before?
* * *
where was that post, e3Di? could You make a link?

i paid for a maxwell lic back in may05 installed it.................
nice workflow and i really liked the ideas of physics based rendering behind it all
BUT....................
too damn slow i have not installed a versions since and when i came back off holiday and was going to put a rc version on board i checked a couple of forums
they have really shot themselves in the foot
then again if any of you have used realflow then you'll know about nl's stanalone stability (or lack of)
if and when it ships as a final version then i'll give it a go but in the meantime it looks like rd's (and vray for the internal shots)
roll the final very vey fast (i hope) av5 release

They are at Beta 3; that just came out. No idea on release date, though. It sounds like they are working hard on it.

may i be honest?
the new interior render You posted, Jenni, looks by far not as good as the predecessors.
it seems not to be really pleasant to have the rendering time multiplied by a factor of 30 just to get a picture like this...
two pures that render the image in 15 minutes and one pure that renders the new image in 17 hours, and even noisy too? what should i think?
i'd like honestly talk about this...
* * *
please render me this interior scene for an advertisement print... 3 by 2 meters.

I post it to get comments, so feel free. Yes, it is different. I haven't had much time to play, and will look at this scene further. The frosted glass looks self-illuminated for some reason.
